ABA Therapy Fundamentals

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy is a science-backed approach that helps children with autism and other developmental differences learn new skills and improve behaviors. It focuses on understanding how behavior works, how it’s affected by the environment, and how learning happens.

What is ABA?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy is a science-backed approach that helps children with autism and other developmental differences learn new skills and improve behaviors. It focuses on understanding how behavior works, how it’s affected by the environment, and how learning happens.

What Behaviors Does ABA Target?

ABA can help with a wide range of behaviors, including:

  • Communication (like requesting items or asking for help)
  • Social skills (like sharing, turn-taking, and making eye contact)
  • Daily living skills (such as dressing, brushing teeth, or using the toilet)
  • Reducing challenging behaviors (like aggression or self-injury) by teaching safer, more effective alternatives

The Advantage of Play-Based Therapy

At Mindcolor Autism, we believe that learning should be fun and engaging. That’s why our therapy is play-based, not just table work. Play is a powerful tool—it builds connection, encourages creativity, and helps kids learn naturally in ways that feel safe and exciting.

Through play, our therapists teach important skills like taking turns, following directions, and using language. Whether it's pretend play with a kitchen set, building blocks, or a game of tag, therapy is tailored to your child’s interests and developmental level.

What Does a Typical Day Look Like?

A day in ABA therapy doesn’t mean sitting at a table for hours. In fact, much of the learning happens through movement, games, and real-life experiences. A typical day might include:

  • Morning circle time or greeting routines
  • Structured play sessions to teach language and social skills
  • Snack and lunch times where we practice communication and independence
  • Outdoor play or sensory activities to support motor and emotional development
  • Table time for short, focused lessons customized to each child’s goals
  • Natural environment teaching—working on skills during everyday activities

Throughout the day, your child is supported by trained therapists who make sure each learning moment feels playful, positive, and productive.
