The ABA therapy roadmap
From Assessment to Achievement: each child's therapy journey follows a thoughtful, proven process designed to support their unique development and celebrate their progress every step of the way.
ABA Assessment
Assessment is a critical starting point in understanding your child's specific challenges, strengths and needs. Assessment can take a variety of forms but typically involves direct observation, interviews, surveys, and establishing baseline levels of skills and responding. The primary goal of assessment in ABA therapy is to help the BCBA develop an individualized treatment plan with specific goals and targets that will be incorporated into your child's daily sessions.

Individualized Plan
Based on findings from the assessment, an individualized plan is created. You might often hear this called an individualized treatment plan (ITP), or a Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP). The plan will set specific, measurable and achievable goals, establish specific teaching procedures, and a plan for implementation.

Begin ABA Therapy
Once your plan has been established, ABA therapy begins. Trained technicians and your BCBA will implement the strategies outlined in the plan through structured teaching sessions, often in a 1:1 therapist to client ratio. The plan will involve family guidance and collaboration as well as plans for ongoing data collection and analysis.

Tracking Progress
Progress will be tracked each session and summarized frequently for your child. Your BCBA will analyze data regularly and make decisions about modifying programs to ensure success. BCBAs will request review meetings with your family to ensure discussion of progress and to identify needed adjustments to the treatment plan. When your child meets their goals, new goals will be established to keep them acquiring new skills.

Fading ABA Therapy
As your child progresses, ABA therapy may be thoughtfully adjusted and transition support defined and provided. A big focus on fading services is on ensuring that learned skills are maintained and generalized across settings. Your BCBA will likely increase a focus on independence ensuring your child can learn from environments where high levels of support are not provided (e.g., general education classrooms).

Graduation and Lifelong Learning!
Children will conclude ABA therapy once they demonstrate the ability to learn from their natural environment and development shifts have occurred such that their growth and development is similar to their same aged peers. This is often referred to as graduation and it is a milestone to be celebrated!

Most health insurance companies are legally mandated to cover ABA therapy for children with autism. We work with most commercial insurers, Tricare, and Medicaid in select locations. Once you get started with us, we'll guide you through the insurance process step-by-step and work on your behalf to ensure your child receives the covered services they need.
Understanding Insurance Basics
Every state requires some form of coverage for ABA therapy for children diagnosed with autism. However, coverage details vary based on your insurance type, plan, and state regulations. Here's what you need to know:
State Mandates for ABA Therapy
Every state now provides some type of mandate for ABA therapy coverage for autism. This applies to both commercial and state insurance plans, though each state's mandate is unique. The amount of coverage, age limitations, and other specifics depend on your state and plan. Within the same insurance provider, benefits can vary significantly between different employers and plans.

Key Insurance Terms
Insurance Premium
The monthly cost of your insurance plan, typically shared between you and your employer.
Deductible
The amount you pay out-of-pocket each year before your health insurance begins to share costs.
Co-Pay or Co-Insurance
A fixed amount you pay for covered services, with insurance covering the remainder.
Pre-Authorization
Required approval from your insurance before receiving ABA therapy services.
In-Network Provider
Providers like Mindcolor who have contracted with your insurance for lower out-of-pocket costs.
Out-of-Pocket Maximum
The maximum amount you'll pay in a year for covered services before insurance covers 100%.
Types of Insurance Coverage

Pre-Authorization for ABA Therapy
Most insurance plans require pre-authorization for both initial ABA assessment and ongoing therapy. This process involves submitting documentation of medical necessity, including your child's diagnostic evaluation and treatment plan. The timeline for approval varies by insurance provider, ranging from days to weeks. At Mindcolor, we handle this process for you, including verifying benefits, submitting documentation, and monitoring authorization requests.
Understanding Coverage Limitations
While state mandates have improved access to ABA therapy, some exceptions exist. Self-funded employer plans may have different coverage rules than fully-funded plans. Some states have restrictions on coverage amounts, age limits, and other regulations. It's important to understand your specific plan's details, as insurance plans follow the laws of the state where they're issued, not necessarily where you live.
